Top 15 Halloween Books To Read

Blank Etsy Shop Icon (4)

Last year I participated in the Blogoween and it was truly fun however this year with my hectic schedule I decided not to get into this year or if there was a Blogoween this year? (I know they also do a Christmas Blogoween type, if you know any more information on that please let me know, I would like to participate for this year)

I’m not the one to read any horror stories like Steven King books or any other really scary stuff but these books on my list I feel are spooky enough and have Halloween/ fall vibes all over it. Here are the top 15 Halloween books on my bookshelf that are a must-read to get you into the spooky holiday.  (Links are to Goodreads)

  1. Serpent & Dove By Shelby Mahurin

1571341127216_filtered

A witch, a witch hunter…hate than love? This book has many good reviews. I have yet to read this book however this is my next read. In the YA book community, I heard more positive feedback than negative plus I’m a sucker for stories that start off with characters that hate each other than fall for each other.

2. Wilder Girls By Rory Power

1571346018449_filtered

This was a creepy little story. This one was also a Barnes & Noble’s YA book club book choice.  I have mix feelings about this story but it still makes the list cause it was truly a creepy story that gave me the goosebumps. This story takes place on an island at a private school full of girls where there is a virus called the Tox. The Tox affects each person differently and gives them very weird side effects. If you are in the mood for a twisted and creepy story this is the one. (Read Non-Spoiler Book Review)

3. Wicked By Gregory Maguire

1571346900893_filtered

I feel like this is a tradition to read the Wicked series in October. This story gives me all sorts of feels for Halloween. This is the story of the green witch we all know from The Wizard Of The Oz and this is her story of how she became the Wicked Witch of the West! There are four books all together in the Wicked series.

4. The Dark Descent Of Elizabeth Frankenstein By Kiersten White

1571347603047_filtered

This title is perfect for the Halloween season! This is a good dark story that will quickly snag you in about a girl who gets accepted by the Frankenstein family and how things turn around for her.

5. Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children By Ransom Riggs

1571350527694_filtered

I have not seen the movie but it is definitely on my list to see. This story takes you to a mysterious island that has an abandoned orphanage with children that are…well…peculiar.

6. My Plain Jane By Cynthia Hand & Jodi Meadows & Brodi Ashton

1571351052614_filtered

If you are into ghost storeies this book is for you. This story is an interesting one but something you have probably never have read before.

7. The Wicked Deep By Shea Ernshaw

1571351228791_filtered

Another good witch story! Good action and one big adventure. The ending will leave you wanting more.

8. The Black Witch By Laurie Forest

1571351528618_filtered

It’s not Halloween if you don’t read a lot of witch stories! This witch story is not like any other, you will get the chills with this one. Follow Elloren’s journey as she is the granddaughter of the last prophesied black witch. I believe there are going to be five books total in this chronical series.

9. Stalking Jack The Ripper By Kerri Maniscalco

1571351704940_filtered

You will get lost in this book and the rest in the series! There are a total of four books altogether. You will follow along with the main character Audrey and this epic chilling story.

10. Pride And Prejudice And Zombies By Seth Grahame-Smith & Jane Austen

1571351805622_filtered

A classic and a good bloody/ gory zombie read. Now a major motion picture, which I have yet to see. This is an all-time classic about the Bennet sisters killing zombies and wanting to fall in love.

11. Hocus Pocus & The All-New Sequel By A. W. Jantha

1571351924882_filtered

Hocus Pocus is extremely popular during Halloween time so its only right to read the sequel too! I was not a huge fan of this book however I feel like it should be on the list just because I love Hocus Pocus the movie I just wished this was written in a different tone. I do recommend reading this if you are a huge Hocus Pocus fan however you are not missing out on anything. In this sequel, you will meet Poppy, the daughter of Max and Allion and the story on how their daughter brings back the witches. Some new characters and old ones return. (Read Non-Spoiler Book Review)

12. Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark By Alvin Schwartz

1571351984930_filtered

This is a true classic read that will get you right in the mood for Halloween. I grew up reading this book and love it. A small book with creepy short stories that will leave you with the chills.

13. The Zombie Room By R. D. Ronald

1571352081129_filtered

This is not another zombie book, this is more of a mystery book that will keep you on edge and wanting to know more. Three men who were released from prison stick together and come across a sex trafficking operation and come across some trouble trying to save a girl.

14. The Face On The Milk Carton  By Caroline B. Cooney

1571352156110_filtered

There are six books in this series and a wonderful mystery series. A young girl named Janie realizes she is on a milk carton as a missing child. She is now 15 years old…who has been raising her this whole time?

15 + a bonus! Classic Horror Stories & Dracula

1571352243216_filtered

If you want to feel real festive than grab some cider and read these lovely classic horror stories, authors such as Edgar Allen Poe, H. P. Lovecraft, and W. W. Jacobs.

I hope you enjoyed this Halloween book list. Happy Reading!

Down The Rabbit Hole Book Review

Title: Down The Rabbit Hole

Series: Stand Alone

Author: Holly Madison

Publisher: Dey Street Books

Pages: 335

Rating:simple-black-heart-silhouette_318-10296simple-black-heart-silhouette_318-10296simple-black-heart-silhouette_318-10296simple-black-heart-silhouette_318-10296simple-black-heart-silhouette_318-10296

SPOILER-FREE!

My mother let me borrow this book and at first, I was kinda on the defense side about reading it but gave it a chance only because I was curious.

Holly wrote this book where it’s going to make you want more and more of the story and why these girls wanted to be a playboy bunny in the first place. The story was juicy and detailed on the life of Holly and how she become a playboy bunny.

I must say that this is one of my new favorite autobiography books. So much detail about Holly and where her life went before and after the playboy mansion.  Holly’s story is not some boring story, from the beginning to the end of the book kept me going where I didn’t want to stop reading.

Holly talks about her time on the show The Girls Next Door, and her relationship with Hugh Heffner and the other girls in the mansion. She shares juicy details about what went on in the house and how things work and what it was like being a playboy model and Hugh Heffner’s girlfriend.

You get an insight into what it was like to be a playboy bunny and what girls did just to be living in the mansion. Holly also goes into detail on her personal life before she was a playboy model and what she did after the playboy life. This story was just interesting to read about Holly and the person she is now today. It’s not easy coming out with the truth or at least her truth in her eyes.

Who’s curious to know?

Every Day I’m Hustling Book Review

416gpBlsO9L._SX328_BO1,204,203,200_

Title: Every Day I’m Hustling

Series: Stand Alone

Author: Vivica A. Fox

Publisher: St. Martin’s Press

Pages: 288

Rating:simple-black-heart-silhouette_318-10296simple-black-heart-silhouette_318-10296simple-black-heart-silhouette_318-10296simple-black-heart-silhouette_318-10296simple-black-heart-silhouette_318-10296

SPOILER-FREE!

What a great autobiography book. I’m so thrilled to have this lovely gem to my autobiography/biography book collection. Very inspirational. I learned a lot from Vivica and what she represents as a successful woman.

I first noticed Vivica in the Quentin Tarantino’s movie Kill Bill, my second favorite movie all time. I read this book this whole week while I was at work on my breaks and when I would get home. I couldn’t put this book down and re-reading some of the pages just to hear her inspiration on life and to be successful.

My favorite part in the book is the “Turn Your Haters Into Congratulators” page 121 section 3.Dont let someone ruin your workspace. I love when she says “Do you have a snake on the loose in your office? My condolences, but we’ll get through this.” I so happen to be reading that part while I was in my office at work and had to share this line with my co-worker who is dealing with some complications at work. It was just perfect timing.

Vivica is smart, funny, and the way she explains her life from the beginning sharing her dreams and doing what it takes and learning from her mistakes such as career-wise and relationship and taking on business she is a headstrong woman. I enjoyed reading this book and had the opportunity to meet her at Barnes And Noble and got my book signed by her.

Who’s ready to hustle?

It’s Almost Time

Hey everyone! I have been super busy (What every blogger says when they go MIA from their blog) I have been looking forward to this month for a very long time and if you have been keeping up with me then you would know that I am expecting my first child this month. She will be here in three days or at least her due date is on the 22nd so I’m sure you understand that I am very excited for this weekend.

Not only is my daughter arriving this month we also moved into a two bedroom apartment, we definitely needed more space for us all however the nursery room is bigger than the master room so I had to make some arrangements for my bookshelves. I used to have them cady corner but now that I have a smaller room I had to put two of the same shelves up against the wall and put the skinner bookshelf into the nursery room.

Nothing too fancy but I’m pretty happy with the setup. Right now I have stopped going on my book hauls once a month and been more focused on baby stuff and setting up everything for her, and what I mean setting up for her we have been working on her own personal library. Also gives me more time to focus on my TBR list because over the year I gathered so many new books and my TBR list is huge right now.

With that being all said I have been doing more “Me Time” I’m still reading every day, however, I been stuck reading my Sailor Moon Manga books right now! I seriously can’t get enough of them and I’m hoping once the baby gets here I won’t be so tired where I won’t be able to read a book? Heck, we all know I’m gonna be sleepy all the time and hope for the best for the first few months and try to stick to my reading routine even if I can only get 20 minutes in I’ll still be happy.

Well ladies and gents, I’m gonna get off here and take that hot bath I been waiting all day for and catch up on some reading while I can. Happy Reading All!

The Currently Reading Book Tag

Untitled.jpg

Found this lovely Book Tag on Reader Voracious Book Blog!

Another day another glory! Today is just a wonderful day to write, it’s been raining all day with thunder and lightning! All this rain has put me into a writing mood so here is a Book Tag that’s been overdue on my book blog. Enjoy!

HOW MANY BOOKS DO YOU USUALLY READ AT ONCE?

Two! Always two. I have my physical copy on hand which I call my current read and on my Nook I have my Netgalley story that I either been approved of to read or volunteer to read.

HOW DO YOU DECIDE WHEN TO SWITCH BETWEEN MULTIPLE READS?

I kinda just go with the flow and how I feel. I tend to have a habit of focusing on the story that has the least pages to finish first rather then the book with the most pages however if a book is really good and most talked about than I tend to favor one read the most thru out the day and my second read later on in the evening with least amount of time reading. It really just all depends on how I manage to switch between my reads depending more on the story.

DO YOU EVER SWITCH BOOKMARKS PARTWAY THROUGH A BOOK?

No, Never! When it comes to my next read I always select a bookmark that I think would go with the story. (I have a small bookmark collection)

WHERE DO YOU KEEP THE BOOK(S) YOU’RE CURRENTLY READING?

Right on my desk, however, there are times where I have fallen asleep with my book in my hands but for the most part, I always keep my physical copy on my desk right next to my Nook and diary and journal!

WHAT TIME OF DAY DO YOU READ THE MOST?

Since I am pregnant I have all the time in the world to read. Right now when I wake up I read for 20 minutes then go eat. I read in the late afternoon then nap time. I read in the evening for bath time and then later at night before bedtime. So basically it’s reading all day for me unless its one of those days were I need “Fresh Time” to do other hobbies and catch up with other stuff I enjoy.

HOW LONG DO YOU TYPICALLY READ IN ONE SESSION?

Always 1 hour to 3 hours.

DO YOU READ HARDBACKS WITH THE DUST JACKET OFF?

Yes! All the time. And if you’re wondering why…I just do, I don’t really have a reason why I take it off.

WHAT POSITION DO YOU MAINLY USE TO READ?

Depends where I am located. I have three spots in my house where I read so first would be my bed so that means I am on my left side with every single pillow in the house next to me. The second location is the couch, I have movie theater couches so, therefore, I have my feet kicked up and laying back with one pillow behind me. My third reading spot is on the porch so I am just relaxing on my porch chair enjoying the weather when I am out there.

DO YOU TAKE YOUR CURRENT READ WITH YOU EVERYWHERE YOU GO?

What a silly question! Of course, I do! I take the physical copy more than my Nook.  I never know when or what is going to happen when I’m out in about especially now that I’m going to doctor visits and they have me wait for seriously forever I have to have a book with me no matter what when I leave my house. I’m always prepared.

HOW OFTEN DO YOU UPDATE YOUR GOODREADS READING PROGRESS?

Every night before bed. I always try to make it my goal to update my progress and pretty good at making sure I keep up with it.

Thanks for catching up with me on this fun Book Tag! I tag every Book Blogger out there who is interested in participating in this Tag.

The Sun Is Also A Star Book Review

SPOILER FREE!

Young love…Who would have thought that I would actually fall in love with this story? I’m not really into romance stories it would have to really get me and I thought this story was pretty cute from the beginning to the very end.

This book has been in my TBR jar and I selected the title surprised to find out that the movie comes out next month so It was meant to be. I knew it was going to be a romance story and I had my fingers crossed it was going to be worth the read and sure enough it was. It’s different, unique, and beautiful…a love story I have not read before so it has originality for me to keep reading.

Our story starts out in New York City. We get to meet Natasha, a young girl who is originally born in Jamaica along with her younger brother and parents. Natasha and her family are being deported back to Jamaica, Natasha is doing everything she can for her and her family to be able to stay in America. Natasha is all about facts and what’s in front of her type of person.

We also get to meet Daniel, who is a Korean – American whose family is from South Korea. Daniels family have high expectations for him to be a doctor and has a very important interview to get into Yale. Daniel is all about fate and destiny and true love.

I definitely feel like the love tension between the two went really fast but in a really good way. We have two completely different people and one who truly believes in fate and tries to show the other to follow your heart and what it says.

“Hope” is the thing with feathers

You know its a good book when you really can’t put the book down and you want to know what’s going to happen and I mean I had to know what the fate was between these two young couples and where they were going to end up. So many questions running thru my head… Are they going to end up being together? Are they getting married on the same day they meet? Do Natasha and her family have to go back to Jamaica? The ending gave me goosebumps! I love endings of stories, it’s everything for me and it ended perfectly for me.

Get your popcorn and candies! The movie comes out next month and I’m very stoked to have a “Me-Time” to watch this!

Ready to take on the Universe?
