The Ultimate Book Tag

Happy Monday Book Worms! I found this book tag on Hunida’s blog! It has been some time since the last time I did a book tag, this one was fun to do and I enjoyed answering these questions.

Do you get sick while reading in the car?

No never! But I’m usually the one that has to drive anyways.

Which author’s writing style is completely unique to you and why?

There are some good ones out there but one that comes to mind would be Gregory Maguire. I love how detailed he is when writing his stories.

Harry Potter Series or Twilight Saga? Give 3 points to defend your answer.

I never read books from both sides, however, I have seen the movies and I’m gonna go with the Harry Potter stories.

  • Harry Potter’s story is original and something you have not heard from another.
  • More intense and unique
  • Fell in love from the beginning of the story to the very end (In Twilight I hate the beginning but love the ending)

Do you carry a book bag? If so, what is in it (besides books…)?

I don’t carry a book bag, used to when I was in school. When I leave the house I just put my book in a book sleeve and carry it or if it fits in my purse.

Do you smell your books?

Yes, I’m guilty of doing this every day! I love the smell of fresh print paper.

Books with or without little illustrations?

I don’t have a preference for this, so either way, I’m fine with it.

What book did you love while reading but, discovered later it wasn’t quality writing?

I don’t ever re-read books. (Unless its the Warrior series)

Do you have any funny stories involving books from your childhood? Please share!

The only thing that comes to mind was when I was in 5th grade this boy in my class threw a textbook from the back of the classroom to the front almost hitting the teacher, she jumped and turned around so quickly. I’m guilty of laughing out loud about it. The teacher knew who was responsible.

What is the thinnest book on your shelf?

Learning To Crochet for left-handers.

What is the thickest book on your shelf?

Star Wars The Han Solo Trilogy.

Do you write as well as read? Do you see yourself in the future as being an author?

I write just about every day, and I do see myself as an author one day.

When did you get into reading?

At a very young age. It was the number one thing I would do before bed.

What is your favorite classic book?

Lord Of The Flies by William Golding

In school was your best subject Language Arts/English?

It was definitely English!

If you were given a book as a present that you had read before and hated…what would you do?

I would keep it and put it on my bookshelf.

What is a lesser-known series that you know of that is similar to Harry Potter or the Hunger Games?

Nothing really comes to mind. Both those book series are original and very good. For The Hunger Games I would say Lord Of The Flies is a little and I mean very little similar to it but not really.

What is your favorite word?

Cake.

Are you a nerd, dork, or dweeb? Or all of the above?

Nerd, reading books, playing video games, computer games once in a while is cool.

Vampires or Fairies? Why?

Fairies, attitude, glitter, and small creatures who are adorable.

Shapeshifters or Angels? Why?

Angels, because they are so holy! Also, they are a good lookout for the ones on Earth still.

Spirits or Werewolves? Why?

Werewolves, I have always loved werewolf stories! I’m so fascinated with them that I used to be obsessed with reading any book about them. I really don’t have a main reason why.

Zombies or Vampires?

Vampires, Well you didn’t give me much a choice and I was never a fan of zombies.

Love Triangle or Forbidden Love?

All about the forbidden love! Those are the best stories.

AND FINALLY: Full on romance books or action-packed with a few love scenes mixed in?

It really depends here for me but I tend to go for the action-packed with few love scenes in the story, a good example would be Six Of Crows by Leigh Bardugo.

If you made it this far thank you for reading, Happy Reading!

Re-Reading My Favorite Book Series

4752319_f1024

Sixteen years ago I picked up a book that had an orange cat on the front cover with the title Warriors. I was obsessed with going to Barnes & Noble getting books and when I saw this book cover I had to get this book. I didn’t read what the book was about, I just knew I would love it just because there was a cat on the front cover and I grew up with having cats. I was eleven years old when I took home the very first Warrior book “Into The Wild”

With the seventh series “The Broken Code” coming out right now I had made the decision to stop reading YA novels for the moment and to re-read my favorite story of all time. Unfortunately, when I got older I had other books that I would pick up to read and never continue to finish the series. I only got as far as to series three “Power Of Three” So I know I have a lot to catch up on and finally get some closure as to what happens to my favorite characters in the story.

What this means by re-reading the series is I won’t be posting YA book reviews for some time until I catch up on the Warrior series, which won’t take long at all. Happy Reading!

Small Fry Book Review

81liycpgotl

Title: Small Fry

Series: Stand Alone

Author: Lisa Brennan-Jobs

Publisher: Grove Press

Pages: 383

Rating:simple-black-heart-silhouette_318-10296simple-black-heart-silhouette_318-10296simple-black-heart-silhouette_318-10296simple-black-heart-silhouette_318-10296simple-black-heart-silhouette_318-10296

SPOILER-FREE!

This is the best memoir I have ever read! Lisa’s writing is so beautiful and so detailed that it makes you not want to put the book down. I was hooked in from the very beginning of the first sentence…

“Three months before he died, I began to steal things from my father’s house.”

If you are asking yourself who is Lisa Brennan-Jobs, she is the first daughter of Steve Jobs and just in case you don’t know who that is he is the genius who created Apple and one of the founders of Pixar animation company. This is Lisa’s story and how she grew up having Steve Jobs as a father.

I knew this story was going to be a rough one meaning that Lisa’s story and how she grew up emotionally were not going to be the easiest. All she wanted was to be accepted by her father. It seems to me that Steve was in his own world and didn’t accept Lisa as his daughter from the beginning. Lisa’s mother, Chrisann Brennan was Steve Jobs’s high school sweetheart and soon after Lisa was born. When Lisa was a baby Steve was not around and even denied that Lisa was his daughter for the longest time.

Chrisann Brennan, Lisa’s mother, was someone I can sometimes relate to and also question the things she did when Lisa was a child. One part of the story I personally can relate was when Lisa’s mother went to the store with just $20…

“Twenty dollars for food and diapers; my mother used it to buy food and diapers, and also a bouquet of daisies and a small pack of patterned origami paper. Money, when we had it, was quick-burning bright, like kindling. We had just a little or not enough. My mother was not good at saving or making money, but she loved beauty.”

Before I became a mother myself I was that person that would go to the store with just little money I had and get one item to feed myself and flowers for the house knowing that I shouldn’t be buying that when I could get something that I really need but the flowers are what made me feel happy to walk into my house with them there on the table to let go of stress for one second to stare at beauty that I had in my home.

There was one time in the book that I had to put it down because I just couldn’t believe the action Steve did sometimes and this one section of the book Steve did something I could not believe that it was the most petty thing I ever heard of, and I just don’t understand why he would do something like this, Lisa’s mother wanted a house that was for sale and told Steve about it however they are not together but not only did this man looked at the house but he did buy the house…for himself and not for his daughter who is living in certain conditions and while he has money and could do what he wants he keeps for himself. I understand buying a house for the mother of your child that you’re not together is a bit too much but for you to actually buy the house she wanted and not let her move in it…

Steve was coming around when he wants to see Lisa and her mother at some point in her life when she was a teenager Lisa was able to move in with Steve, which was not all that glamorous for her. With restrictions and rules but not normal rules like not able to see your mother for six months for whatever reasons, maybe the health reasons? Lisa’s parents are something else, the decisions they make in life, and how they treated Lisa was shocking.

All Lisa wanted was to fit in with her father and be recognize as his daughter. Steve was no ordinary man and the relationship he had with Lisa and everyone was bizarre. I really enjoyed this book so much, Lisa did a fabulous job writing her story, it wasn’t gossip or talking negative about anyone, she told her story and she did a wonderful job doing so.

All I know is I would never go out to eat with Steve Jobs!

Ready to take a look through Lisa’s eyes?

This is my first time posting for “First Time Impression Friday” I needed to participate in another one and look forward to doing a lot more of these.

First Impression Friday will be a meme where you talk about a book that you JUST STARTED! Maybe you’re only a chapter or two in, maybe a little farther.

I’m currently reading Small Fry by Lisa Brennan-Jobs. For those of you who don’t know who Lisa is, she is the daughter of Steve Jobs…and if you don’t know who that is, he is the creator of APPLE!

My aunt Nicky had recommended this book to me and I first thought this was going to be a good book and so far it is. In fact usually when I open a book it takes a few chapters for me to get into it but this is not the case. The very first sentence was great!

“Three months before he died, I began to steal things from my father’s house.”

I mean this is Steve’s job’s first child who he told people that she is not his daughter and was not very nice to her and a very unusual person. So far this book is hard for me to put down. Reading what Lisa has gone thru as a child so far is pretty shocking. I feel like it’s only going to get better and more interesting. I can’t wait to see what the relationship leads with her and Steve and what happens with Lisa and her mother and everyone else. I feel like this book so far is going to be a full 5 stars hearts.

Top 15 Halloween Books To Read

Blank Etsy Shop Icon (4)

Last year I participated in the Blogoween and it was truly fun however this year with my hectic schedule I decided not to get into this year or if there was a Blogoween this year? (I know they also do a Christmas Blogoween type, if you know any more information on that please let me know, I would like to participate for this year)

I’m not the one to read any horror stories like Steven King books or any other really scary stuff but these books on my list I feel are spooky enough and have Halloween/ fall vibes all over it. Here are the top 15 Halloween books on my bookshelf that are a must-read to get you into the spooky holiday.  (Links are to Goodreads)

  1. Serpent & Dove By Shelby Mahurin

1571341127216_filtered

A witch, a witch hunter…hate than love? This book has many good reviews. I have yet to read this book however this is my next read. In the YA book community, I heard more positive feedback than negative plus I’m a sucker for stories that start off with characters that hate each other than fall for each other.

2. Wilder Girls By Rory Power

1571346018449_filtered

This was a creepy little story. This one was also a Barnes & Noble’s YA book club book choice.  I have mix feelings about this story but it still makes the list cause it was truly a creepy story that gave me the goosebumps. This story takes place on an island at a private school full of girls where there is a virus called the Tox. The Tox affects each person differently and gives them very weird side effects. If you are in the mood for a twisted and creepy story this is the one. (Read Non-Spoiler Book Review)

3. Wicked By Gregory Maguire

1571346900893_filtered

I feel like this is a tradition to read the Wicked series in October. This story gives me all sorts of feels for Halloween. This is the story of the green witch we all know from The Wizard Of The Oz and this is her story of how she became the Wicked Witch of the West! There are four books all together in the Wicked series.

4. The Dark Descent Of Elizabeth Frankenstein By Kiersten White

1571347603047_filtered

This title is perfect for the Halloween season! This is a good dark story that will quickly snag you in about a girl who gets accepted by the Frankenstein family and how things turn around for her.

5. Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children By Ransom Riggs

1571350527694_filtered

I have not seen the movie but it is definitely on my list to see. This story takes you to a mysterious island that has an abandoned orphanage with children that are…well…peculiar.

6. My Plain Jane By Cynthia Hand & Jodi Meadows & Brodi Ashton

1571351052614_filtered

If you are into ghost storeies this book is for you. This story is an interesting one but something you have probably never have read before.

7. The Wicked Deep By Shea Ernshaw

1571351228791_filtered

Another good witch story! Good action and one big adventure. The ending will leave you wanting more.

8. The Black Witch By Laurie Forest

1571351528618_filtered

It’s not Halloween if you don’t read a lot of witch stories! This witch story is not like any other, you will get the chills with this one. Follow Elloren’s journey as she is the granddaughter of the last prophesied black witch. I believe there are going to be five books total in this chronical series.

9. Stalking Jack The Ripper By Kerri Maniscalco

1571351704940_filtered

You will get lost in this book and the rest in the series! There are a total of four books altogether. You will follow along with the main character Audrey and this epic chilling story.

10. Pride And Prejudice And Zombies By Seth Grahame-Smith & Jane Austen

1571351805622_filtered

A classic and a good bloody/ gory zombie read. Now a major motion picture, which I have yet to see. This is an all-time classic about the Bennet sisters killing zombies and wanting to fall in love.

11. Hocus Pocus & The All-New Sequel By A. W. Jantha

1571351924882_filtered

Hocus Pocus is extremely popular during Halloween time so its only right to read the sequel too! I was not a huge fan of this book however I feel like it should be on the list just because I love Hocus Pocus the movie I just wished this was written in a different tone. I do recommend reading this if you are a huge Hocus Pocus fan however you are not missing out on anything. In this sequel, you will meet Poppy, the daughter of Max and Allion and the story on how their daughter brings back the witches. Some new characters and old ones return. (Read Non-Spoiler Book Review)

12. Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark By Alvin Schwartz

1571351984930_filtered

This is a true classic read that will get you right in the mood for Halloween. I grew up reading this book and love it. A small book with creepy short stories that will leave you with the chills.

13. The Zombie Room By R. D. Ronald

1571352081129_filtered

This is not another zombie book, this is more of a mystery book that will keep you on edge and wanting to know more. Three men who were released from prison stick together and come across a sex trafficking operation and come across some trouble trying to save a girl.

14. The Face On The Milk Carton  By Caroline B. Cooney

1571352156110_filtered

There are six books in this series and a wonderful mystery series. A young girl named Janie realizes she is on a milk carton as a missing child. She is now 15 years old…who has been raising her this whole time?

15 + a bonus! Classic Horror Stories & Dracula

1571352243216_filtered

If you want to feel real festive than grab some cider and read these lovely classic horror stories, authors such as Edgar Allen Poe, H. P. Lovecraft, and W. W. Jacobs.
